'Super Sand' cheap water purifier

Contaminated water can be cleaned much more effectively using materials are cheap and easily obtained the so-called "super sand".

"Super Sand" might be a cheap way to clear water in developing countries.

This technology uses graphite-coated sand that was used to pencil in a way to mix in a temperature of 105 degrees Celsius for several hours.

The research team describes its results in the journal of the American Chemical SocietyApplied Materials and Interfaces.

Graphite sand may be a solution because it was the primeval used to clear water.

By using ordinary sand water filter technique becomes difficult.

Dr. Wei Gao from Rice University in Texas, the American told the BBC that ordinary sand is less effective than a fine sand when water contaminated with pathogens, organic matter and heavy metal ions.

With a good sand quality water will seep very slowly.

"Our products combine sand coated with carbon material capable of absorbing pollutants and at the same time easily penetrated the water," explained Dr Gao.

In many countries, access to clean water and sanitation facilities are limited.

WHO World Health Organization states "only 60% of the population in Sub-Saharan Africa and 50% of the population in Osenia use water that has been processed".
